Do you want to chat?

Hello everybody:

Some teachers complain about the bad influence of chat language. They say chat language is a bad influence because teens use abbreviations, smileys or acronyms instead of writing full words  :(

Using chat language in text messages and chat sessions is OK, but it is not when you are writing for school, university or a formal e-mail.

Let's check how familiar you are with English chat language.

Activity one: Type a message and then select English to lingo and then click on "transl8it"  Click HERE and have fun!

Activity two : Your teacher will dictate you a message. Type it  and then select English to lingo and then click on "transl8it"

Activity three: Take a pen and a sheet of paper. Watch the following slide show (It may take some seconds to download). Read the instructions below carefully.

Stop at slide 3, read it carefully and try to turn the "chat language" lyrics into a normal version on a sheet of paper. Then you can check your version with the lyrics in slide for. (Idem slide 5 and 6; 7 and 8, 9 and 10 , etc.)

Activity four: Write in comments your opinion about chat language

  1. I think chat language is more difficult than "real" language, but it's interesting to know. And the Transl8it is usefull.

  2. I think chat language is complicated, and not so useful...it's good to now how to write in lingo, but i don't prefer that kind of writing because it is clearer.

  3. I think that chat language is complicated to understand, but it's important to know how it works because English people use lingo to text messages. I prefer typical language.

  4. I think that chat language is very useful for text messages. But, in some cases it is really dificult to understand and you get confused. Also, in our opinion it´s wrong to use this type of language for school homework.

  5. In my opinion, I prefer to write using full forms, because it is easier. However, it 'is necessary to know it, we need to understand chat language because American people use this all the time, and we have to understand them.

  6. I think that chat language is difficult to understand when you see it for first time. But with the time you begin to understand it and use it often. Also, that is a really short form of english talk. I prefer normal english.

  7. I think that chat language is silly.. but if you learn it and practise, it could be interesting.
In my opinion this kind of chat language which uses numbers is very exaggerated..but maybe another kind of chat language is better and easier to learn.

  8. I think chat language is a good idea to comunicate with others, but you have to learn it and if you don't know it, it's difficult to understand. I prefer people talking in the tyipical language.

  10. I think that chat language is useful bescause it's quicker that 'real' language. It's difficult I know, but when you get accostumed it's easy. Also many people write their emails using this language and if you know it, you can understand them.

  11. I thnk chat language is a degradation of the original language. Because people that use it is because they don't want to spend five minutes more typing. And if they use it a lot the original language will start changing little by li
    ttle.

  12. From my point of view, chat language is not useful. I don´t use it because is difficult to understand and,for example, if you want to write a formal letter it´s complicated because chat language uses a lot of short forms and formal letters don´t include them. Otherwise, you´ll be mixing styles. For me, formal writings are easer.
